“…an annual range in formula costs between $648 for a store brand and $2,800 for Nutramigen, a [hypoallergenic] formula.” —The San Diego Breastfeeding Coalition, 2001
“One study found the average additional healthcare cost for formula-fed infants ranged between $331 and $475.” —Ball, 1999 (Imagine how much it must be now!)
“…there are five manufacturers of infant formula and that there have been, on average, two infant formula recalls per year for the past 3 years.” —FDA.gov (http://www.fda.gov/OHRMS/DOCKETS/98fr/E8-14258.pdf)
“Aluminum levels in soy formula are 36 times higher than in human milk.”

“…formulas containing DHA resulted in higher DHA blood levels but did not result in significantly increased visual acuity.” (Hornby, 1998) “Current concentrations of DHA in infant formulas are considered inadequate.” (Sarkadi-Nagy, 2004)
Too much for me! Mama milk is FREE.

I am on a mission to get local news stations who ask for “story ideas” to do a piece on the benefits, especially in this economy, of breastfeeding. I suppose if you put dollar signs around this subject it won’t be so taboo. Let all the health benefits for both mom/baby, bonding, etc come as an aside and allow the focus to be on HOW MUCH MONEY families can save who choose to breastfeed. FREE FOOD FOR YOU BABY, People! Come on!
So I am going to as many local news station web sites and typing in a “story idea” like this.
Maybe your readers would do the same in their areas???

Yay for breastfeeding! Now if we could just get employers on board to make it possible for working mamas to breastfeed too, that would be sweet.
